ABOUT THE 84TH
The 84th is part of Lowe Memorial Presbyterian
Church, Finaghy. Although we have been in existence for about 70 years we
are still very much in touch with boys needs in 21st century. The 84th is structured in 3 age groups meeting
each Monday night in Lowe’s halls - ANCHOR BOYS– P1 to P4 – JUNIOR
SECTION– P5 to P7 – COMPANY
SECTION– Year Year 11 to Age 18 - We meet throughout the year from September to April, with
additional activities during the summer months. We have two major events
during the year – the BB Praise Service and the BB Display (see the “Important Dates” section for details). ANCHOR BOYS
(AB) AB offer a range of activities - team games (ie
relays, football, hockey), individual challenges (ie
stick-in-the-mud, skittles, penalty kicks), crafts, stories, cooking and
much more. There are video/dvd nights, theme
nights, sports competitions, outings and in general good fun. But what are
we really about??? Boys learn to mix and play with each other – making new
friends. The boys fundraise for the NI Anchor Boy appeal which supports two
local charities each year. And of course we share with the boys that Jesus
loves them and is always looking over them. JUNIOR SECTION (JS) It’s an easy progression for existing AB moving to JS but it
is just as easy for new boys to join at any stage. There are a
variety of activities including games, hockey, football, volleyball, chairball, relays, marching, craft, cooking, outings
and a lot more. JS are marked on attendance and effort and prizes for
individuals and squads are given at the end of the year. The boys fundraise
for the appeal organized by the Presbyterian Church which supports 3rd
World Charities. JS use course such as A.L.F. (About Life and Faith) which
encourages the boys to discover and ask questions about Jesus and his
followers. COMPANY SECTION (CS) Opportunities exist within the CS for any young person to
express themselves. With weekly activities such as
football, volleyball, fitness, drumming, bugling and computers.
There are also special events such as weekends away, dvd nights, bowling, laser quest, go karting, ice hockey. We also have in house competitions
in all kinds of sports and also participate in competitions against other BBs in the Belfast area eg
5-a-side, cross country, table tennis, volleyball, football, band, sports
quiz, fishing the list is nearly endless! At present the 84th is trying to set up an
informal Old Boys’ Network – so if you are an Old Boy have a look at the
Old Boy section of the website to get details. And don’t forget to let other
Old Boys know!!
